Excuse Letter

To my happenstance readers, pardon me my absence in the past few weeks. The December hullabaloo has gotten in the way of the past week's activities. Not much from my side of the planet, except that there was a PAK Improv show last November whose story takes off from another group performance done in the same month last year.

Lots of backstage things going on. Going back online in the next year. 2012 should be a good one.

On: Zombie One

It was fun shooting Kahlil de Pio's film Zombie One, and Alex Uypuanco and I finally saw the almost-finished product Tuesday last week before the-late-Manny's tribute gig. Looked like a kid, I did, which was what we had been gunning for, and for the first time, I didn't cringe so much watching myself in a film. Cheers!

The Really Bad Poets: My Other Worlds

"Pomes of all shapes and sizes," like Kerouac says. Come join the fun, whether or not you have a poem with you. RANT!

Late posting: Manny Amador

We had a running joke, Manny and I: come sing Summertime and get your free beer, come on!

He always played Summertime whenever he saw me walk in at the Outpost. He would play anywhere, with anyone who's willing, who's more talented, who's less talented, and he didn't even think about that.

He thought about how fun it would be to make music.

I still find myself looking for pieces of him online.

I won't sing Summertime the same way ever again.

Now he can turn his Marshall amps up to 11 in heaven.

Film shoot with Kahlil de Pio

These days, there's been a cropping up of films on zombies in the local scene. I do not know whence this comes or what the triggers are.

Weekends are generally for the cooler stuff. This sunday, Khalil de Pio is shooting a film called "Zombie One." Very interesting project to get invited to do; I wonder what Cebuanos think of zombies -- creatures that aren't very much part of our mythology. This should be exciting.

Because you vex, I hex.

When I woke up, everything seemed wrong. The day was wrong, the internet was slow, and most of all, it is Monday.

The Monday Motherfuckers are at it again, like I always say. And this time it came in the form of a comment whose bitter aftertaste kept lingering, but I couldn’t seem to put my finger on it, until two hours earlier.

There's think-time, and then there's happy think-time. It was the latter for this weekend, but I couldn't shake off the feeling that something vulturine had been waiting for me to pay for all that exceitement over the weekend. "Here's your bill, ma'am."

I remembered Cattski's blog on musicians and day jobs and how some people can be unwittingly offensive. I can forgive their lack of tact owing to the fact that not many people understand it. Forgiveness, though, will come later. MUCH later.

Overhauled: Songs and other Poemstorieshit

Previously  called the 'Poemstorieshit' collection, the project was shelved for months after intermittent recordings both satisfactory and otherwise.

Some of the pieces however, will be featured in a solo album that's currently being remolded, which will include both songs and poetry pieces.

Here's a sampler from the Poemstorieshit collection -- "Artist Ka." Artwork created by my brother Miguel Fonacier

The Daily Grind

Today, I am "Sucker Punch"-ing.

I am busy evading duties for an hour, war zone style, playing jazz war drums in my head. There's sanity to be preserved every day, and it is always a feat. I am relishing the last few minutes of this hour, like a hot cup of cocoa and cigarettes and rain all at 4 o'clock.

It's comforting to know, though, that some people are in the same boat. It makes one hopeful for oneself and for the rest.

The Project I have been working on is at a standstill, to boot, which makes things a little more frustrating. But like my friend said: if things nothing's moving, go out and have coffee.

Photos, photos

I wish I had more photos, but due to connection restrictions, this is all i can do for now. I also don't have a copy of the photos my friends took while we were in Manila.
Thanks to Liyo for these.

Nell

For the last time,
I will glorify this scum
(for aren't we all scums anyway):
That there is he
who furtively climbed cars with boys to get paid if the grapevine news was right;
who borrowed amounts beyond his capability to return;
who hid burrowed in sheets of pain and wailed in the middle of the night;
who held his passion in his right hand and an empty cup in his left, waiting for long overdue rain to quench a soul-thirst
because the jarring truth is that not all of us are blessed, perseverance does not always pay and it leads us in resignation to find hope in squalid back-alley paths to an end instead, how very Machiavellian;
whose photo memories lay plastered on a wall in a worldwideweb bodega somewhere;
who tried to live and gave the last dregs of his dreams to children losing hair to chemo.
Here lies he
who did this all, and all for dreams
because he dreamed hard, he knew how to dream,
(more than moneyed but talentless nitwits in ivory towers, yes he knew how to dream)
but whose dreams were too far to reach from the bed that neither his body nor the holes in his pocket would allow

Turtle's Nest # 4

January 15, 2011

The place is empty save for the staff, and the cat who has no idea I'm supposed to leave the place in about ten hours. I sit on the familiar couch reading a magazine at 3 am. This time, I'm the only one home. This time, it's just the yellow light, and the amber-colored beer.

I flip the magazine open to a random page where Roy Lu's article is – he's talking about the then-newly opened gallery of Turtle's Nest. I flip to the front page and find that it's a 2006 edition, right about the same year when I started hanging out here.

Looking up from the magazine to the empty café, it's hard not to imagine the old folks sitting at the long dining table, bottles of beer in between them; the old crowd trickling in, the crowd who weren't necessarily friends with each other, but who knew who was which or what time they usually arrive at the little quaint café, staying for hours never mind if blaring on the radio was "Sana Dalawa ang Puso Ko" like it is now; because sometimes, everyone suddenly bursts into song together like in musicals because growing up wherever we did, no one could ever escape the labandera's AM radio music, the karaoke next door, or the Hot FM songs to which the jeepney driver is humming along. Looking at the small annoying gang of skimpily clad teens in tank tops and and boys in razorback shirts at the dining table, I start to think that not one of these new ones really understands what this place is about anymore, especially that they're drowning out Janno Gibbs with Justin Beiber. I'd offer that pretentious idiot to Heaven in exchange for Jimmy Hendrix anytime if I could – that is, if the Lord (or the devil) doesn't get equally annoyed.

Turtle's Nest #3

I wake up and it's 2003.

Russ is rapping at my door, and after I put on my robe and open the door he asks, "Are you hungry?"
