Of all the things that Rep. Cutie del Mar could speak of in her privilege speech, she had to demand an apology from Gloria Diaz for the latter's remark wherein she used Cebuanos as an example.
I no longer care about rationalizing what Gloria Diaz said, but I do care about how the people think.
AND FROM WHERE I SIT, IT'S LOOKING MORONIC.
"I invite all of you to view the hundreds of comments posted by my fellow Cebuanos on the Internet following Diaz's controversial televised statement," says Ms. del Mar. She did not invite people to view the video itself, nor to think before reacting.
"I therefore call on Diaz to issue a sincere public apology to the Cebuano people. It is the most responsible thing to do as the battle for national unity rages," says Ms. Del Mar, Representative of Things Petty.
But she failed responsibility. This was her indoctrination, her official membership into the self-serving lot of showbiz politicians.

She failed to exhort the people to think maturely and drop the stupid thing, and instead selfishly rode on the issue to shape a seemingly positive public image. She failed responsibility by not representing Cebu in matters most important.
See, I don't pay my taxes so she can talk in Congress about fecal material fit for The Buzz.
We sure are acting like snotty prima donnas if we're using national unity to elicit an apology. Shall we conclude that our contribution to the Philippines depends on that apology, because otherwise, we shall refuse our country help?
If people truly wanted national unity, we'd be focusing on Dengue. Hunger. Education budget. Solving the hostage crisis and firing the people responsible. Bringing the poor out of the sorry muck they're in. Segregating trash. Cleaning oil spills. Effecting change. Helping the president. Making sure my taxes are where they're supposed to fucking be. Point the blaming finger back at ourselves and away from others.
And as if Ms. Diaz's apology would do anything to help in national unity.

Even if Diaz apologized, Cebuanos will still not get over their age old resentment towards Manila people.
Even if Diaz apologized, many ManileƱos, the big networks, and soap operas will still portray the Cebuano as the stereotypical househelp.
Even if Diaz apologized, we will still not learn to love our own, e.g. we don't like our paganistic festivals unless they're lousy photocopies of the Mardi Gras.
Even if Diaz apologized, many Cebuanos will still not learn to appreciate Tagalog, and many Tagalogs will still not acknowledge Bisaya, despite Bisaya being the more widely spoken language in the country.
Nagpakauwaw pa gyud ta kay nagpaklaro lang nuon ta'ng wa kasabot, lakip na mga lokal nga politiko.
If Cutie del Mar wants to talk about national unity, then this is the worst time to care about regional ego. The same should be true for all of the country.
We need to rally about other things. There are countless other ways to achieve this national unity she's yapping about, none of which we are doing.

If there's anything that unites us, we all stand strong under the same banner of noontime shows, asinine show hosts with equally inane opinions, vacuous and formulaic box office hits oozing with mush, opportunistic showbiz politicians, generations of school drop-outs, and peaceful, crime-less streets whenever Paquiao beats the shit out someone. Other than that, we were united because we had a long history of colonization, suffering, and a long standing case of identity crisis.
This is our people.
We are easily slighted by jokes, and we take out of context some passing remark because we are insecure: we probably don't know exactly who we are.
So, before you make national unity an excuse to gain media leverage through petty issues, tell me, Cutie, what is national unity in our god forsaken country?
